About Us
We are a family of five dedicated to bringing fresh, vibrant entertainment to our community, offering live jazz music to the local scene each week.
Brandon Mattox
Brandon Mattox spent his childhood on military bases until the age of 12, when his family settled in Prince George’s County following his father’s service in the U.S. Air Force. He is a proud graduate of Oxon Hill High School.
Brandon is the grandson of Leander Eldridge Douglas, affectionately known as “El,” whose love for jazz deeply influenced Brandon’s own passion for the art of jazz musicianship. Inspired by his grandfather’s legacy, Brandon envisioned a way to bring the richness of live jazz to his local community—not as background music, but as a celebration of musicians as true artists. He shared this vision with his wife, Maria, and together they set out to create a space where jazz could be experienced with the respect and presence it deserves.
Outside of his love for jazz, Brandon is a dedicated basketball official. For the past 16 years, he’s been a familiar face on courts around the county, where he finds joy in watching local youth develop their skills, grow in confidence, and create lasting memories. The entire family shares his enthusiasm for the game, making both jazz and basketball integral parts of their lives.
Maria Mattox
Maria Mattox was raised in Bowie, Maryland, and graduated from Bowie High School before earning her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Maryland, College Park. Her passion for working with children led her to various roles at the YMCA, including teacher’s assistant, teacher, Camp Director, and ultimately Childcare Director. After completing her degree, she went on to teach in the Prince George’s County Public School System.
At age 26, Maria married Brandon, the love of her life, and together they have three children. While she didn’t grow up listening to jazz—her musical roots were in go-go and hip hop—Maria developed a genuine appreciation for live jazz through the energy and passion of the bands performing at El’s Place.
Maria takes great joy in welcoming guests and being the warm, familiar face that greets them at the door. When she’s not at El’s Place, she’s likely cheering from the sidelines or transporting their kids to basketball practices and games—a sport that’s become a cherished part of family life.
Jamil
Jamil is 15 years old and entering the 10th grade at Thomas Stone High School. His favorite part of being at El’s Place is seeing the joy on guests' faces and feeling the positive vibe it creates. In his free time, Jamil enjoys relaxing and watching TikTok videos.
Jaylen
Jaylen is 13 years old and heading into the 8th grade at John Hanson Middle School. At El’s Place, he enjoys serving food to guests and being part of the welcoming atmosphere. In his free time, Jaylen loves playing video games and staying active on the basketball court as a member of the Maryland Pumas AAU team.
Jackson
Jackson is 9 years old and entering the 4th grade at J.P. Ryon Elementary School. His favorite subject is math, and at El’s Place, he especially enjoys earning tips for helping out. In his free time, Jackson loves playing video games and basketball. He plays for the Maryland Pumas AAU team and dreams of becoming an NBA player when he grows up.
